Why do we participate in a Simple Church? Are we reacting against bad practices or negative experiences? Or are there good and positive reasons for establishing Simple Churches? Today, Gavin and Tom share their top five favorite features of Simple Church.

94: Benedict Optional?

In a recent book called “The Benedict Option: A Strategy For Christians in a Post-Christian Nation,” Rod Dreher describes the impending decline of Christian influence in the West and offers suggestions for preserving Christianity within a hostile anti-Christian culture. Today, Tom and Gavin review the book and discuss ways that the Simple Church can help preserve the Christian faith in a non-Christian world.

Today, we continue our interview with Kaleb Phillips, working with the Simple Church Alliance in Wilmore, Kentucky. Kaleb works with troubled teens and young adults. Within the past year, he has baptized over a dozen people! Today, Gavin and Tom talk with Kaleb about discipling young people from various family backgrounds (or perhaps no family) within the Simple Church.

91: Are Young Adults Leaving the Simple Church?

We’ve noticed a phenomenon among young Christians who have grown up within a Simple Church structure. The majority of them seem to discontinue their participation in Simple Churches in favor of more traditional “brick and mortar” churches. While we are thankful that they remain faithful in their church participation, Gavin and Tom wonder why they don’t perpetuate the Simple Church model as adults. Join us as we discuss this trend.

90: Each Other

Jesus never intended His people to experience church apart from other followers. We cannot “do” church alone. Whether we are part of a huge mega-church, or a small group, God intends for us to experience life as part of a community of other believers. There are ways that God expects us to treat each other. The way we act as a community is visible to the world around us and can either attract the world to Jesus, or repel them away from His truth. How should we act towards one-another? What difference does it make? Listen as Tom and Gavin discuss.

89: Do You Like Your Worship Spontaneous or Planned?

When Christians gather to worship, whether in an established church building or in someone’s living room, the format of such worship can vary dramatically. Some venues can be very regimented, with strict adherence to a schedule. Others can be full of liturgy and other formal elements of worship. Still others can be very relaxed and unstructured. Some may even be chaotic free-for-alls. Is there specific way in which believers are to worship together? Let’s discuss this.
