ACTING OUT! Lessons from the Book of Acts

Episodes Eleven through Fifteen

You may have noticed some short interruptions our podcast episodes that we call “Acting Out.” No, we are not misbehaving. Acting Out is the segment of our show when we look to the book of Acts in the Bible and find lessons from the early church. In this brief segment, we ask ourselves, If the 1st century church turned the world upside down then, what could the church today do equally well in the 21st century?

Since these episodes of Acting Out are very short, we have combined them into a series with five episodes in each download. We look forward to producing more episodes to include in our normal “Keep It Simple” podcast.

  1. “Even the Worst Person Can Be Saved” from Acts 9.  00:30
  2. “Barnabas the Encourager” from Acts 9:20-31.   03:09
  3. “Peace? Or Persecution?” from Acts 9:31.   05:42
  4. “God Arranges an Unlikely Meetup” from Acts 10-11.   08:38
  5. “The Church Being The Church” from Acts 11:19-30.   12:52

Enjoy!

131: Creeds, Confessions, Catechisms, and Statements of Faith

Does your simple church adhere to a Statement of Faith or Creed? Does it use a Catechism to help disciple new believers? What value do these extra-biblical texts have for the simple church? Tom and Gavin examine these centuries-old documents and discuss the pros and cons of systematic theology for the simple church.

127: Deconstructing

What does a person mean when they say they are “deconstructing their faith?” Does it mean that they have questions, or even doubts about their faith in Christ, or does it mean that they are walking away from their faith altogether? If so, what can the church do to help such a person? Tom and Gavin explore this phenomenon in the North American Church.

Tom and Gavin review the popular Christianity Today podcast series, “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill.” We examine the spectacular arc of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, pastored by Mark Driscoll, from its simple beginnings to its tremendous popularity and its sudden implosion in 2014. There is much for any church to learn from this story and the Keep it Simple Podcast will highlight some of the cautionary lessons to be learned.
